According to a report from ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne, the Warriors could revert back to the ‘San Francisco Warriors’ moniker that the team held from 1962-1971:
“We’re very curious what our fans think of that,” Warriors president and CEO Rick Welts told ESPN.com. “I couldn’t imagine making that decision in the very near future, but we definitely want to see what our fans prefer.”
The Warriors announced earlier this week that they purchased a property in the San Francisco area and plan to build a new arena there before the 2018-2019 season.
“We’re spending a lot of time with the facility itself to do everything possible to replicate what we think is a really special atmosphere for our games at Oracle,” Welts said.
We’re not exactly sure how die-hard Warriors fans will take to the team dropping the “Golden State” part of their name, but personally as a born Californian I hope they vote against it. Golden State just flows well with the Warriors color scheme and it makes for a pretty cool representation of that region of California. The Warriors have built something on the brink of special with their current team. Hopefully they retain their current name as well.
