On Sunday it was reported the Detroit Pistons have decided to go another route with their head coaching position, firing Maurice Cheeks. Among those apparently surprised at the decision were point guard Brandon Jennings and veteran big man Charlie Villanueva.

Is it true?

Expectations around Detroit were high heading into the season. The Pistons added Jennings and Josh Smith during the offseason. Andre Drummond was expected to build on a promising rookie year and take a step forward this time around, and he largely has. Greg Monroe is one of the more underrated post players in the league. All that being said, the Pistons are off to a 21-29 start and currently find themselves just outside of the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Now, Maurice Cheeks, in the first year of a two-year contract, won’t make it to the All-Star break.
Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski mentions assistant coach John Loyer as a possiblity to fill-in on an interim basis. Another option (albeit probably not as realistic) is Rasheed Wallace, who is serving a role of player development coach with the Pistons. Wallace has always been a popular player among fans and some of them are doing their part to try to get him the head coaching gig.
Will be interesting to see how many signatures it gets.
