The New York Knicks began the 2013-2014 season with high hopes but have gotten off to just a 1-2 start after the season’s first week. Knicks owner James Dolan is so disappointed in what he’s seeing from his team that he has ordered the Knicks spirit dancers to not dance during games, per the NY Daily News:
Dolan has become such a hands-on owner — figuratively speaking — that, according to a source, he doesn’t want the dancers dancing. Crazy, right? The same guy who wanted creative input on the dancers’ outfits (and he’s good at it) apparently ordered that the girls’ roles be reduced to mostly throwing T-shirts into the crowd. They performed maybe one routine on Sunday.
Why? No one seems to know, except the standard answer is usually “that’s Dolan.”
So to recap, the grumpy owner who spent millions on players that may not equal into a contender has reacted by not allowing the dance squad to perform during games. Because, you know, the dancers are why the Knicks are losing, of course. It has nothing to do with the fact that the group of players Dolan has assembled didn’t get past the second round last season, and they probably won’t go much farther this season, either.
Dolan needs to lighten up and relax a little. The Knicks season is only three games deep so far and they have another 79 games to get it together before hitting the panic button. New York is a high-pressure market, but a disgruntled owner isn’t going to win Dolan any new fans in the Knicks locker room. Or with the fans, now that they can’t enjoy the dancers during games anymore. :(
