Sunday two of the NFC’s best teams squared off with the Green Bay Packers facing the San Francisco 49ers in the Bay Area. The game featured one of the NFL’s rising stars in Niners QB Colin Kaepernick and one of the league’s premier defenders Clay Matthews. Matthews is known as an all-out player, so when Kaepernick scrambled out of the pocket Clay took advantage of his opportunity to hit the mobile QB:
Matthews was flagged for a late hit on the play, given that Kaepernick was a step out of bounds when the two collided. While some are calling the tackle dirty, I don’t see anything wrong with it. Kaepernick was on the move, it’s Matthews job to stop him. A quarterback running out of the pocket and not sliding is fair game. That’s part of what makes football so great.
The Niners pulled out the victory in the end, but I wouldn’t be surprised if these two met again in the playoffs. And if they do, I fully expect Matthews to play with the same intensity that he brings to every play. As he should.
