Jay-Z’s dive into sports management has put together an impressive roster so far in it early stages, and his agency Roc Nation Sports plans to expand that roster with the hottest player in baseball; Los Angeles Dodgers Yasiel Puig. Here are details, per a report from Y! Sports:
During a mid-June trip to New York, Puig was invited to a party at a club Jay-Z owns after a Dodgers teammate passed along the rapper’s contact information, one source said. Between the lifestyle and marketing plan offered by Roc Nation Sports, Puig left the meeting intrigued.
While Puig has spoken with at least one more marketing agency in New York, the prospect of his joining Roc Nation as a client covering both baseball contracts and marketing remains a possibility, sources said.
The Cuban-born Puig has started his MLB career with a bang, batting .407 with eight home runs and 19 RBI’s through his first 34 games in the Majors and is in the running for the final fan vote to make the All-Star team. Roc Nation Sports already has popular slugger Robinson Cano as one of it’s clients, so acquiring the phenom Puig would increase the agency’s presence in major league baseball.
Jay-Z took a jab at super agent Scott Boras on his latest album “Magna Carta Holy Grail” that caused a stir among other agents/agencies that questioned Jay-Z’s qualifications as a baseball players representative. Apparently the rapper was serious in his quest to take over as the next big sports agent, as Roc Nation Sports is partnered with well established CAA, making signing with the agency less of a risk for potential clients. The agency is also reportedly seeking to add Oakland A’s slugger Yoenis Cepedes to it’s roster as well.
