Dwight Howard took all of the headlines for a few hours on Friday night as the Dwightmare finally came to an end with Howard choosing to sign with the Houston Rockets and spurning the Los Angeles Lakers in the process.
In his first full interview after he informed Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak that he wouldn’t be returning, Howard had some interesting things to say about his decision and the process, but the most curious tidbit was what he had to say about Phil Jackson. Here is the excerpt from his interview with Alex Kennedy and HoopsWorld:
If Phil Jackson had been more involved with the Lakers or coaching the team, would that have affected your decision?
DH: “Well, I asked to have him as my coach earlier in the year. (pause) The best decision for me was to do what’s best for Dwight. I think this is the best thing for me. This wasn’t a decision about anybody else. I didn’t have anybody pushing me to do anything. This is what Dwight wanted.”
It’s really hard to believe that the Mike D’Antoni hiring had so much effect on the Lakers, but it seems it really did. I guess the next time they have the chance to hire one of the best coaches in NBA history, the Lakers probably won’t pass it up.
