Lolo Jones strike again with ill-advised tweet

06/27/2013 at 2:33 pm By

lolo jonesThursday during the controversial trial involving George Zimmerman and the killed Trayvon Martin, US track star Lolo Jones decided to weigh in with a joke on Twitter regarding the testimony of Rachel Jeantel, a friend of Martin’s that was serving as a witness in the case.

Here’s a screenshot of Jones’ attempt at humor:

lolo jones tweet

Given the sensitive nature and racial tension caused by the trial, a public figure such as Jones probably should have used better judgement with the “joke”. Jones’ sense of humor has had a habit of bad timing ever since her decision to go public with her desire to retain her virginity until marriage, which is by all means her choice. For example, she posted a video mocking the pay she received as a member of the Olympic bobsledding team.

Lolo should hire a PR person to advise her that jokes such as these just aren’t wise for a person in her position.

Geez, what a contrast, both black women, hard to make a case of anyone being more disadvantaged than LoLo.. yet Lolo represents what is possible when one refuses to be pigeon holed as a “victim”. Love her!

Thank you! I get so weary of trotting out “freedom of speech” anytime someone is criticized for something they said. Perhaps we’re overly optimistic to expect Americans to actually know what the Constitution says.

I guess what you were trying to say is that she can only joke about things you find funny. Maybe you are trying to say that because she is a public figure she can’t exercise her freedom of speech. However it is possible that you are being a hypocrit and should probably take your own advice. In either case, smack yourself across the face and stop attempting to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

I wholeheartedly agree with you and this is my first time posting on a sports blog!

While I admire Lolo Jones athletic skill and position on chastity, she is young and has much emotional maturity to acquire.

Really, to post something humorous during a hotly contested murder trial that is emotionally charged is dubious, at best.

Also, doing so during the week that Paula Deen found herself vilified for insensitivity is just doggone stupid. Did no one tell her as she was growing up, “If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing?”

Lolo, I love you, but friggin’ grow up! Freedom of speech has consequences.

may have consequences but its still her right and her opinion, just like the writer of this article thats trying to fuel the fire. the media thrives on creating racial issues or blowing them out of proportion and getting people onwhatever side pissed off. thats their job. i agree with lolo, the witness is a freaking ghetto piece of trash and shouldnt even be a witness. this same writer didnt post about the witnesses facebook post about qoute “imma get high before court and get my court nails did” fucking ghetto. i agree with lolo. more people should stand up and speak their mind without being scared of being called a racist or bigot.

No one called Lolo a “racial bigot”; she’s actually bi-racial (black and white mixed). The article simply states that her joke was made with terrible timing.

WE all need toget back to the BIBLE instead of letting ” MAN” influence our lives.

It was hysterical. By the way, this case would not be such a big deal had Zimmerman been black. The prosecution is not looking for the truth just a liberal agenda and a crime against a white man. Trayvon was a thug..good riddance.

And if Trayvon was white, he would still be alive. Your racism is coming through your pores. It doesn’t matter what his past was, does that mean that he deserved to die? If that is the case, then you have done something in your past to warrant you to be dead as well. You are the typical soft, scared white person who hides behind the internet because have no guts, you wouldn’t say that in public because all white people are scared. I at least admire the Klan because you know where you stand. Zimmerman is going down and so are you.

I really hope many of you are not over 18 years of age that’s making so many immature comments…this is not about LoLo really, nor is it about the witnesses..it’s about family’s torn apart behind someone trying to be a hero and did not know his life would turn out like this. Dont’t you see they both lost..someone was killed and look at what Zimmerman has become..really!!! I understand freedom of speech, I look at that as someone saying something that would make a positive difference in this Nation as a people, saying something stupid is really for someone that’s not worth listening to… but then again when you agree with ignorance, it says much for you!!!.. I hope none of you have children and would have to experience this to understand the full impact of what really is happening here!!! Zimmerman killed a child to become WHAT????? Look at what this has done to both families!!!!

Yeah thats pretty funny and spot on. All Jones did was point out the obvious. People are just too sensitive and blinded by the medias perspective. Jones wasn’t insulting the Martin family or mocking the death of Trayvon. I understand this is a serious case and a family lost their son, which I couldn’t imagine. But lets be honest. This lady isn’t helping their case, she is hurting it. Get this clown off the stand and give zimmerman a fair trial. One without the social activist or some mourning friend or family member crying out about racism every chance they get just to sway public opinion to get what they want….This is a court of law deciding the fate of a persons life, this isn’t the Steve Wilco show.

You imply that her decision to remain a virgin until marriage, while her choice, shouldn’t have been made public. I could say the same thing about people who make their homosexuality known to all. Is that not something that should be kept private, as well? The hypocrisy is a bit much.

And freedom of speech doesn’t have consequences. That’s why it’s called “freedom”. One’s right to say what they feel shouldn’t carry caveats. It ceases to be a right when it can be punished. People need to relearn their civics lessons.

Twitter certainly shouldn’t be in our history books with the amendments. Everyone has a damn opinion and everyone is a comedian. Hey look at me. I have something funny to say while at my computer. This is a 19 y.o. young girl being thrust into the spotlight in an extremely contentious and intense cross examination in front of the nation. She’s a witness in a murder trial, not some reality show bafoon. She didn’t solicit this national scrutiny. You would think the least people could do is show her the same respect many of you would expect. How pathetic to condone the actions of someone who doesn’t even know her by using one example of her to judge and make jokes about her. What is wrong with people today? No other witness has endured this, but it’s always convenient picking on those who stick out the most. To think the 1st Amendment was set to protect attacks against an innocent private citizen. How disgusting for anyone to think that right is to protect that type of behavior! Lolo Jones along with many here and in this country have truly forgotten what these rights are intended for. And hiding behind the 1st Amendment and what’s it’s not intended for in slandering an innocent young lady is beyond disgraceful. She did nothing wrong to anyone and testified to the extent of her involvement on a particularly horrific night of her young life. Because that wasn’t delivered in a perfect package is fodder to some is telling. Try not yielding to your baser and most basic selves sometimes and try maybe considering for a minute the person on the other end of these completely unnecessary attacks.

Explain to me if he was a want-to-be thug, the young man was doing nothing wrong at the time Zimmerman decided to take the law in his own hands. Because you start a fight and get your butt whipped during that fight doesn’t allow you to pull out a gun and kill someone. Maybe he should have listen to the dispatch and sat his punk*** down.

I’m confused how there is a race issue in this trial. Zimmerman is a hispanic-American and Martin is an African-American. As I see it, there are no “evil” White-Americans involved, which seems to be the only race that people can use the race card against.

And also, since blacks are called African-Americans, shouldn’t white people be called English-Americans? Seems like a double-standard….
