In the World Baseball Classic semifinal matchup between the Dominican Republic and the Netherlands on Monday night, the Netherlands looked like they might blow open the top of the first inning.
After already bringing in a run, the Netherlands had a runner on third with two outs. That’s when Dominican Republic left fielder Moises Sierra made this amazing grab on a foul ball in left field:
Fantastic grab; well done.
However, in the aftermath of this catch, many people are comparing it to the infamous 2003 NLCS Moises Alou-Steve Bartman incident. Are there similarities? Yes. Both guys are named Moises, both guys play left field, and both catches had a fan trying to catch the foul ball.
But let’s be real here. The wall at AT&T Park is maybe two-to-three-feet high while the wall at Wrigley Field is at least six-feet high and probably higher. That’s why Alou had to jump to get his glove over the wall and Sierra was able to dive into the stands.
So please, let’s appreciate how great of a catch Sierra made and stop drawing pointless comparisons.
