Carmelo Anthony spent just one season at Syracuse University, but it was probably the best season in the history of the school’s men’s basketball program.
As a freshman Anthony led the Orange to an 81-78 victory over Kansas in the NCAA Tournament’s championship game to give the school its first, and only, national title. He was a Second Team All-American, All-Big East First Team selection, NCAA Freshman of the Year, and Big East Freshman of the Year for the 2002-2003 season. Anthony was also named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player.
On Saturday, in front of more than 35,000 at the Carrier Dome, Syracuse retired Carmelo Anthony’s No. 15 jersey during halftime of its game against Georgetown. He joins other notable names like Dave Bing, Derrick Coleman, Sherman Douglas, Billy Owens, and Rony Seikaly who also have their numbers hanging from the rafters.
