Just as news was released that Los Angeles Lakers reserve forward Jordan Hill would be sidelined with a herniated disc, the team announced Tuesday that All-Star center Dwight Howard has been cleared to play full-court five on five, Mark Medina of the L.A. Times:

Howard, who the Lakers acquired in August in a mega-trade involving Andrew Bynum and three other teams, has been rehabbing after undergoing back surgery in April. Howard has been participating in some drills during training camp but was not yet cleared to fully scrimmage.
The Lakers also announced that Howard would not play in their second preseason game Wednesday against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Lakers open their regular season at home October 30 against the Dallas Mavericks.
