Heavily criticized Sox manager Bobby Valentine crashed his bicycle during a ride through Central Park, caused by reading a text from Dustin Pedroia. You can’t make this stuff up. Here are details per the NY Times:
Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine on Tuesday lay entangled with his bicycle at the bottom of a ditch next to the Central Park Reservoir.
Valentine was reading a text on his phone from Dustin Pedroia… When he looked up, he had to swerve to avoid the umbrellas of two French tourists walking in front of him. The bike skidded, and he lost his balance and went careening head over pedals down the side of the hill by the road.
“I shouldn’t have been reading a text while I was riding, ” he said. “That’s the wrong thing to do. But at least I was wearing my helmet.”
Valentine sustained only minor injuries and was still able to manage the Sox to a 4-3 extra-inning loss Tuesday night. This season has been a disaster for the Red Sox, as they have struggled with injuries, motivation and questionable decisions all season and currently hold a 69-92 record, worst in the AL East. 2012 is the Sox first season with a losing record since 1997.
Valentine was hired by the Sox after popular manager Terry Francona was let go during the offseason, but fans and media in the Boston area have been calling for Valentine to lose his job for months. With the team under such turmoil and Valentine becoming more of a side show than a positive influence, they may get their wish.
