Heavily criticized and highly paid New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was allegedly seen flirting with a couple of fans during their ALCS game 1 loss, per the NY Post:
“I watched him flirt with two admittedly very cute young women nearby,’’ the witness said.
Instead of rooting on his teammates as they struggled to stay alive during the tense game at Yankee Stadium, A-Rod had a ball boy toss the young women a baseball inscribed with a message asking for their numbers.
“Alex was holding a pen and wrote a note on a ball which was thrown at the women by a ball boy,’’ the witness explained.
In the 12th, team captain Derek Jeter broke his ankle — and A-Rod finally wised up, the witness said.
“The flirtation stopped once Derek Jeter got hurt,” the source said.
Now, we have no problem with a pro athlete getting their flirt on. But the issue here is that A-Rod, who is making about $30 million this season, had been pulled for a pinch hitter in a crucial moment of the Yankees postseason. And instead of rooting on his team, Rodriguez is focusing on a couple of women in the stands.
Many analysts have tried to dissect Rodriguez’s troubles at the plate but the fact of the matter might be that at 37, he just isn’t that good anymore. Throw in a lack of focus, and the Yankees basically have a $20 mil+ utility player on their hands for the next five seasons.
