The Clemson Tigers improved to 3-0 today with a 41-7 victory over Furman University. Wide receiver Sammy Watkins made his season debut for Clemson after being suspended for the first two games of the season as a result of an offseason arrest.
After a freshman year that saw him catch 82 passes for 1,219 yards and 12 touchdowns Watkins was on many preseason All-American lists. Until his suspension was announced in August Watkins was being touted as a legitimate candidate for the Biltenikoff Award and possible dark horse for the Heisman Trophy. Chances of each took a hit with his absence in Clemson’s wins over Auburn and Ball State but Watkins was back on the field and got to shake off the rust this afternoon.
Watkins finished with 4 catches for 52 yards and showed off his wheels on this carry.
A relatively easy day for Watkins to get back into the swing of things ahead of next week’s showdown with #5 Florida State in Tallahassee.
