NBA teams are getting creative with their promotions these days, but this one from the Memphis Grizzlies may be the best one yet. Per The Commercial Appeal, the Grizzlies are offering gas cards and pre-season tickets in exchange for turned-in firearms. Here are a few details:
During the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Bloomfield Baptist Church, the city and its partners plan to hand over a $50 Mapco gas card for each gun a person turns in, limited to three guns, or $150 worth of gas cards, per person. Those who surrender guns will also receive two free tickets to a preseason Memphis Grizzlies game.
“We’re doing everything we can to get guns off the streets,” said Memphis Police Department director Toney Armstrong.
The guns will be taken on a “no questions asked” basis and will be destroyed. The weapons will not be tested or inspected to determine if they were used in a crime, according to police department spokeswoman Karen Rudolph.
This is a great promotion for both the city and the Grizzlies franchise. Not only are they doing the city a great service for safety, but the promotion should also drum up some excitement for the team and hopefully boost regular season attendance. The Grizzlies finished just 16th in the NBA, despite making the playoffs as the fourth seed in the West.
Hopefully the Grizzlies and the city of Memphis gets a nice turnout for this promotion and are able to remove tons of guns off the streets. Professional sports teams doing things to make a difference in the community is always a welcomed sight.
