The news of Heisman finalist CB Tyrann Mathieu being released from the LSU football team broke early Friday afternoon. Head Coach Les Miles took to a press conference to tell the public, but was very vague in the reasoning. He only told reporters that Mathieu violated “both” team and school rules

Now a source has revealed to ESPN that Mathieu violated the team’s substance abuse policy multiple times.

A source close to the situation also personally told me Mathieu actually failed five drug tests, for “an illegal drug.”  That could be accurate, according to LSU’s substance abuse policy. After one failed test, they do not have to suspend a player. Two failed tests calls for a suspension of “up to 15% of games.” And three failed tests result in a year suspension.

This would lead one to believe that Mathieu’s failed test last season was his second, leading to that one game suspension.

If the Honey Badger did indeed fail that many drug tests I’m wondering why he wasn’t suspended for the year, under the policy rules. Perhaps more to the story than we know of, still.
