People have a tendency to make some off the wall comments when it comes to a popular athlete. Some recent remarks made by CBS football analyst Boomer Esiason are the latest example.

Esiason proclaimed Monday on his radio show that if he were the Jets management, he would cut Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow (sure he would). Here are his comments:

“I’m just telling you right now, I would (cut him), and I’ll tell you why I would,” Esiason said alongside “Boomer & Carton” radio partner Craig Carton. “It’s not in any way, shape or form — I think — benefiting this team.”

“You can say whatever you want about Tim Tebow,” said Esiason. “He played some of the worst football that any quarterback has ever played in the history of the game last year at times.”

Let’s be real here for a second. Yes, Tebow mechanically may be one of the worst passing quarterbacks in the NFL. But what Tebow brings to a team as far as leadership, determination and, yes, celebrity are far too valuable to “cut” as Esiason suggests. A prime example is the Tebow-lead Broncos 29-23 overtime victory against the Steelers in the playoffs last season. Hollywood couldn’t have produced a more fitting ending to that game.

The Jets are an average team competing with the SB champ Giants for New York football supremacy and front page headlines. The amount of coverage the Jets have gotten so fr this off-season for a team coming off 9-7 campaign is amazing. That alone is reason to keep Tebow on the roster.

Personally I’m chalking Esiason’s comments up as a reach for attention and ratings, or just flat out ‘hating’. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion, no matter how off-base they may be.
