Earlier in the season the New York Mets were one of the surprising stories in baseball. R.A. Dickey was near unhittable. Johan Santana was unhittable (for one game) and reminded us how good of a pitcher he can be when his arm/shoulder are healthy. David Wright was hovering near a .400 batting average and looking like a legitimate MVP candidate. At one point the Mets were 29-23 and just one game behind the Washington Nationals in the NL East.
But that was then.
Since that time the team has been in a tailspin, which is probably being kind. The Mets are now 57-68 after a 1-0 loss today to the Colorado Rockies (50-73), who swept the four-game series and handed New York its fifth loss in a row. The only bright spot of the day for Mets fans was that Olympic gold medal gymnast Gabby Douglas threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Among those who aren’t pleased with the way the season has turned for the Mets is well known radio host Mike Francesa, who unleashed this rant on his show.
Dan Le Batard tips his hat in appreciation.
