Wisconsin Badgers running back Montee Ball finished the 2011 season as the FBS leader in rushing yards with 1,923 and tied Barry Sanders’ NCAA record of 39 touchdowns. He topped the 200+ yard mark twice, with a high of 224 against Illinois, and racked up 1,070 yards over his final six games.
Unfortunately for Ball those numbers didn’t translate into many Heisman Trophy votes. He finished fourth in the voting behind Robert Griffin III, Andrew Luck, and Trent Richardson and received just 22 first place votes. Those three will be playing on Sundays this fall so last year’s Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year will have another chance to make a run at the Heisman in 2012.
One of Ball’s rivals for the coveted trophy, USC quarterback Matt Barkley, will soon have a smartphone app released to help us keep up with his progress throughout the season. No app for the Wisconsin running back (atleast not yet) but at this website you can track the countdown as Ball attempts to become the all-time NCAA leader for touchdowns. You can also receive updates via the @MoneyBall28 twitter account.
In the meantime we have this video to watch.
Montee Ball and the Badgers get their 2012 season underway on September 1 versus Northern Iowa.
