After a slow start to the 2012 London Olympics, swimmer Michael Phelps has gained redemption, as well as the title of most decorated Olympic athlete in history. Phelps secured his 19th Olympic medal today when the US Men’s swim team took the gold in the 4×200 relay, passing Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina’s previous record of 18. Of Phelps 19 medals, 15 are gold.
Phelps picked up his 18th medal earlier in the day by finishing second in the 200m butterfly, his first medal of the London games. Phelps will also be competing in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, giving him a chance to further increase his medal total.
