The New England Patriots made a surprising move Wednesday by cutting Veteran RB Joseph Addai. Now, a league source tells Mary Paoletti of Comcast SportsNet New England, that Addai was struggling during his conditioning test, and just quit. Belichick apparently couldn’t put up with a quitter on his roster, and cut him.
Addai rushed for 4,453 yards and 39 Touchdowns in his six seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. His last couple of seasons with them were plagued by injuries, however. He missed eight games in 2010 with a nerve injury in his shoulder and was irritated by a hamstring injury in 2011, which caused him to miss four games.
Who knows if Addai would have a roster spot had he fought through his conditioning struggles. But I’d like to think his chances of remaining a Patriot would be better if he did not just give up. Especially since the Pats need an experienced running-back on the chart with 2011 draft picks Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley.
So the young LSU RB beat out the “old” 29 year old RB. Good luck to Addai making someone else’s roster, but he’d be hard pressed to find a team to take a chance on him after this news.
