Detroit Tigers pitcher Drew Smyly was forced to leave last night’s game against the Cincinnati Reds after three innings because of a blister on the middle finger of his left hand. Because Smyly apparently received numerous requests for a picture of it he obliged earlier today via his Twitter account.
Manager Jim Leyland’s thoughts:
“I couldn’t believe it,” Leyland said. “He came up and said, ‘I can’t go anymore.’ I said, ‘What?’ I looked and it and I said, ‘Oh, my God.’ I’ve never seen anything like it. … It’s the biggest blister I’ve ever seen.”
Smyly is in his first season with the Tigers after receiving a non-roster invite to spring training this year so it’s understandable he wants to seize the opportunity and has visions of making his next scheduled start on Saturday. But the biggest blister Jim Leyland has ever seen might have other ideas. We’ll have to wait and see.
