As the team formerly known as the New Jersey Nets become the Brooklyn Nets next season the plan is to have point guard Deron Williams be the centerpiece of the team and marketing efforts. For that to happen the free agent Williams would have to choose the Nets over several other teams who would also love to have his services.
The Nets and Dallas Mavericks appear to be the front runners for the time being, but that’s always subject to change. The Mavericks have Dirk Nowitzki, Mark Cuban’s wallet, and the opportunity to play home games in the state Williams played high school basketball to offer. The Nets have Jay-Z, the brand new Barclays Center, and MarShon Brooks.
The Nets also have desperation on their side, which they showed today by parking this outside Williams’ home.
The Phoenix Suns were reportedly willing to take advantage of Williams’ love of golf by pitching the great courses in the area to lure him as a replacement for Steve Nash should he sign elsewhere.
Desperate times call for desperate measures.
