The Chipper Jones farewell tour is in full swing as the career of one of the greatest switch hitters and third basemen in Major League Baseball history slowly comes to an end.
Tonight, Jones’ Atlanta Braves begin a four-game series against the Reds in Cincinnati, marking Chipper’s last appearances at Great American Ballpark. To commemorate the occasion special bases will be used.
The Reds will present one of the bases to Chipper and one to the Braves for their hall of fame. Following the series finale, one of the bases will remain on display in the Reds Hall of Fame.
A classy move by the Reds organization, one Chipper has faced 122 times in his career. During those games Jones has a .297 average, 80 runs scored, 21 home runs, and 81 runs batted in. He has appeared in 20 games at Great American Ballpark.
In his final visit to Busch Stadium earlier this month Chipper Jones was honored with a framed photograph of himself swinging at the home of the St. Louis Cardinals as well as an autographed Stan Musial jersey. The New York Mets have said they will also acknowledge the future Hall of Famer’s career when he makes his last regular season trip to Citi Field in early September.
