The news keeps getting more grim for Saints fans this off season. Per NFL insider Mike Freeman the league has suspended star linebacker Jonathan Vilma for the entire 2012 season for his participation in the Saints bounty system that was uncovered earlier this year:

Vilma, who was a Saints team captain, allegedly offered a $10,000 cash bounty to any teammate who took then Viking quarterback Brett Favre out of a playoff game in 2010. Other suspended include DE Will Smith (4 games), current Browns linebacker Scott Fujita (3 games) and free agent DE Anthony Hargrove (8 games).

The Saints were already without head coach Sean Payton for the entire 2012 season and GM Mickey Loomis for 8 games. Former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has been indefinitely banned from the NFL as well.

Clearly the NFL is sending a message to all teams by making an example the Saints in their efforts to increase player safety in the NFL. Unfortunately for Saints fans, their team has to suffer the consequences.
