Update: as of Wednesday evening The Grove has lifted its ban on Manny Pacquiao.
Current welterweight champion and politician Manny Pacquiao caught some heat for his comments in a recent interview with the Examiner questioning President Obama’s stance on same-sex marriage. Here’s a snippet of Pacquiao’s comments:
“God’s words first … obey God’s law first before considering the laws of man.”
“God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married, only if they so are in love with each other. It should not be of the same sex so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah of Old.”
Whether or not you agree with Pacquiao’s stance or President Obama’s support of same sex marriage isn’t the focus here.
What IS the focus is that due to his comments, popular Los Angeles shopping area The Grove has banned Pacquiao from their premises, according to LA Weekly (which was lifted Wednesday evening):
“Based on news reports of statements made by Mr. Pacquiao we have made it be known that he is not welcome at The Grove and will not be interviewed here now or in the future. The Grove is a gathering place for all Angelenos and not a place for intolerance.”
Pacquiao was scheduled to film an interview with Extra and host Mario Lopez at the Grove Wednesday afternoon but that appearance was of course cancelled.
Congressman Pacquiao has a right to his opinion, just as any person does. But given his status, the public popularity battle he is (if even indirectly) involved in with Floyd Mayweather, and the fact that he has a PPV fight approaching, his comments on the topic of same sex marriage wont win Pacquiao any new fans. It may actually cost him a few.
UPDATE: On Wednesday, Pacquiao attempted to clarify his controversial comments, stating that he is not against homosexuality, just same-sex marriage. “I’m not against gay people,” Pacquiao said. “I have a relative who is also gay. We can’t help it if they were born that way. What I’m critical of are actions that violate the word of God. I only gave out my opinion that same-sex marriage is against the law of God.”
Maybe Pacquiao should take a page out of classic campaigning and just smile, wave and avoid saying anything controversial until those PPV buys are secured.

The right to free speech means gives you rights from the government. It does not mean you can say whatever you want and expect that everyone will support you. The mall does not agree with discrimination. It is no different then if they ban someone from having public appearances that is a racist. A company should not want to associate themselves with someone who wishes to discriminate against people.

A mall is a public place, period. So long as someone is not damaging the public, or the property, they should be allowed access. What someone believes about any issue should be irrelevant as it relates to access.

Just because a person is shopping there does not mean that the mall is supporting their “public appearance.” Would I be allowed to ban a person from my restaurant if I disagreed with statements they made in favor of gay marriage? Would I be allowed to ban a person from my restaurant if they were a Christian or a Muslim? Why then can a mall ban Manny from shopping their because of his beliefs? The owners of this mall that claim it is not a place of intolerance have proven it to be a place of intolerance by banning Manny. One opinion is accepted while the other is not. I am continually appalled by the lack of understanding of the derivation of your rights and the basic premise of what it means to be an American.
Your rights do NOT come from the US government. The government cannot take away your right to free speech without violating the Constitution. You have natural rights in the US which makes the US a unique country in the world.
Marriage is not a right in itself. The fact is the government should not be in a position to support or ban marriage between any people who have the ability to consent and will not create an issue of social hygiene (e.g., the medical outcome of incest).
This is where the gay acceptance and the anti-gay acceptance movement trips up. Gay people should not be asking for special rights. They SHOULD be demanding that the government stop interfering with the rights they ALREADY possess as Americans. In that simple change in tactics, they would gain the support of Libertarians and non-religiously defined Conservatives everywhere.

The Mall is a public place, it therefore cannot discriminate against anybody based upon their constitutional right to free speech and beliefs. By their actions they have violated his rights and should be subject to litigation. Tolerance works both ways. Why did the ACLU defend white supremacists/Neo Nazis rights to march in a Jewish area of Chicago? Because to trample on one part of the constitution is to trample on all of it. Manny Pacquiao does not even have ‘the right’ to vote on the issue of gay marriage because he is not a US citizen. Someone asked his stance/opinion on he subject and he experessed his honest opinion. The problem is, why special treatment because of private, sexual acts? There are many sexual acts that do not get special treatment. If homosexuality was naturally occurring in human species at a much higher proportion and had a purpose in the continuation of the species, I would agree with the “special” treatment. Moreover, a study about the long-term mental and physical health of homosexuals should be researched and openly published so that the many individuals with little facts needed to make a judgement about laws should be made available. I am not advocating discrimination; just recognition that homosexuality is not a biological trait normally created in nature. As the religious side of things. The old testament is gods word written by man. The new testament was jesus’s and mans word written by man. Then it was translated numerous times by man. As I am sure you know anytime man is involved unintentional and possibly intentional errors come into play.
This can be seen by the “different” bibles we see today.
You also have to look at the ways the Church has changed Christianity over the years. At one point Catholic priests had wives and concubines. This changed as the church wanted the priests property to go back to the church upon death. A huge change to the religion to satisfy mans greed.
I am a christian but I have little faith in church. I have been told growing up that the only way into heaven is to except jesus into your heart and ask for foriveness. I have had churches tell me my infant cousin who died when born went to hell for he did not ask for forgiveness. Same with My metally retarded uncle who cannot grasp the idea of jesus. I have heard those who have never heard the Name jesus in foreign countrys will go to hell. But yet our god loves us all. I can believe that because of where or how someone was born will condemn them to hell.

As I have been thinking about this more. Polygimists should be able to get married the only 2 issues I can think of off the top of my head is I do not know how the taxes would work. I am not a tax expert by any means. I also do not know how insurance would work as a insurance company wont be able to keep things as they are and cover 10 adults for what they charge now.
The tax issue would not be a problem if they passed the “Fair Tax” or something similar. The insurance issue I am sure could be handled similarly to how they handle children with paying one price for one or more for more then one. But while I do not personally agree with polygamy in the sense I would not do it they should be given the same hospital visitation rights and the such.
