Former two-sport sensation Bo Jackson knows alot of things. Bo knows football. Bo knows baseball. He also knows Heisman Trophies, Walter Camp Awards, MLB All-Star Game MVP Awards, and American League Comeback Player of the Year Awards. He knows what it’s like to be an All-Star in two sports. Bo knows Alabama as well. He was born and went to college (Auburn) there.

Last year the state was hit with tornadoes which caused widespread damage and unfortunately casualties. Later this month Jackson will embark on a 300 mile trek across Alabama with hopes of raising $1 million for the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund to help those whose lives were impacted by the storms.

“This is something to recognize all of those great Alabamians that lost their lives in this tornado,” Jackson said. “It doesn’t matter if they were Auburn fans, Alabama fans, Troy fans, UAB fans, (West Alabama) fans. When you have a significant loss of life in one day that we had in our state, that is enough to make you stand up and say ‘Hey, certain things aren’t important right now.’

“If I can do anything to shine the light on the importance of us treating each other with respect and showing that we are our brothers and sister’s keeper, if I can do that on a minute scale, I will feel I’ve done something worthwhile for my state and my fellow brothers and sisters.”

Bo has lined up names like Scottie Pippen, Cam Newton, Picabo Street, Lance Armstrong, Ken Griffey Jr, and Eddie George to participate with him on the journey that will begin in Henagar and continue through Guntersville, Cullman, Jasper, and Bessemer before concluding in Tuscaloosa.

The final three miles will be open to the public. A $200 donation is required to take part in stages prior to that.

Jackson’s bicycles of choice will be custom made by Trek Bikes and will include the names the 249 people killed in the tornadoes. He will ride a different one each day and all five will be auctioned off afterward with the proceeds also going towards relief efforts.

At the moment $198,379 has been raised.
