The Oklahoma City Thunder appear to be serious about being a championship contending NBA franchise for years to come. The Thunder have agreed to an extension with young, star point guard Russell Westbrook, per multiple reports. The extension is said to be for five years and int he neighborhood of $80 million. Here are details via Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski:
Thunder general manager Sam Presti finalized the deal with Westbrook’s agent, Thad Foucher of Wasserman Media Group, on Wednesday night.
The Thunder will hold a news conference when the team returns to Oklahoma City on Sunday.
Westbrook wanted to stay with the Thunder, and the two sides reached an agreement with several days to spare before next Wednesday’s deadline for rookie contract extensions.
Westbrook was named second team All-NBA last season, just his third in the NBA after the Thunder selected 4th overall in 2008. Locking up Westbrook keeps the Thunder’s core of Westbrook/Durant together for the foreseeable future, as the Thunder inked Durant to a similar 5-year extension in 2010.
The Thunder currently sit atop the Western Conference standings with a 12-3 record. After starting the season slowly, Westbrook is now averaging 20.5 ppg, 5.5 apg and 5.0 rpg. For his career, Westbrook is averaging 17.9 ppg, 7.0 apg and 4.8 rpg through 3+ seasons.
