Not much went right for the Clemson Tigers in last night’s Orange Bowl. The 70-33 final score indicates that. Per ESPN Stats & Info West Virginia set or tied 9 bowl records. Some of them were: most team TD’s (tied) (10), most points scored (70), most points in a quarter (35) and half (49). Mountaineers quarterback Geno Smith threw for 401 yards and tied a record with 6 touchdown passes. Junior wide receiver Tavon Austin was on the receiving end of 4 of Smiths TD’s, also tying a record.
You can’t blame Clemson’s coaching staff or returning players for wanting to forget the game ever happened and look ahead to next season. Unfortunately for the school the game did happen and alot of people saw it. Clemson fans watched it. So did alumni. Boosters did too. Perhaps more importantly recruits were watching and the performance was bad enough to negatively impact one young man.
Ouch. If he replaced Clemson on his list with West Virginia that would be something else. Just as easily as some prospects can be persuaded to attend a school based on its uniforms others can be turned off by a bad national television performance.
On a good note Rivals has Clemson’s 2012 recruiting class ranked #10 in the country and #2 in the ACC.
