On January 2nd the Michigan State Spartans will take on the Georgia Bulldogs in the Outback Bowl. Participants will receive a $150 Best Buy gift card, Jostens ring, Fossil watch, and (not surprisingly) a $25 gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse. In addition to those items Michigan State players will receive a special gift from the school, part of the Nike Combat uniforms they wore for their 28-14 win over rival Michigan in October.
The helmets are valued at $200 each, half of what the school is allowed to give the players as a bowl gift.
This year’s victory over the Wolverines was the 4th in a row for the Spartans over their in-state rival. Michigan State won 35-21 in 2008, 26-20 in 2009, and 34-17 last year. After already receiving the jerseys and gloves players seem to be genuinely excited about being able to have the headgear, according to the Detroit Free Press.
“First of all, how awesome it looked,” [sophomore Max] Bullough said. “But then it’s about beating Michigan. If we would have lost to Michigan, or something wrong would have happened that day, then we wouldn’t want those helmets. It’s more than beating Michigan for the fourth time in a row. That’s important to us.”
“The helmet, it represents so much. It’s like a piece of you, especially when you’re playing. The jersey we wanted, but the only thing other than that we wanted is the helmet. It’s something you’re going to keep forever. You’re going to put it up in a case, let your kids look at it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing for MSU. It’s exciting to be a part of that, especially the senior class, beating (Michigan) for the fourth time.” – Fifth-year senior Brian Linthicum
Looks like the move is a hit with the players so mission accomplished. Let’s hope with an estimated value of $200 none of those helmets find their way into the hands of someone else via a transaction that would result in an NCAA violation.
