Looks like the workout free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens staged yesterday actually succeeded in garnering some interest, albeit not quite from the teams Owens and his agent Drew Rohenhaus were anticipating. The Chicago Rush has extended a contract offer of $400 a week to Owens for the 2012 season, per the team’s website:
The Chicago Rush announced today that the team has extended a contract to six-time NFL Pro Bowl wide receiver Terrell Owens for the 2012 season. The contract will be good for the standard player agreement.
“We feel that this is an ideal time to approach the future NFL Hall of Famer,” said Rush General Manager and President Gene Nudo. “It would be a fantastic honor to add Terrell to our current roster for the 2012 season.”
It should be noted that this promotion is included in the same press release by the team:
In honor of this contract offer the Chicago Rush is offering an $81 Flex Plan to its loyal fans. The plan includes four tickets to a Chicago Rush home game. Additionally, the package includes four Rush hats as well as four Rush Nike Dri-Fit training shirts to ensure Rush fans will never have to work out shirtless again.
We can chalk this news up as nothing more than a PR move by the Rush, who saw the opportunity of offering a “contract” to a potential Hall Of Fame receiver in obvious need of a team as a mean to drum up some media attention. And so far it’s worked. Owens has been no stranger to publicity stunts of his own (see here) so maybe the tables have been turned on him for once. Hopefully Owens can land with a NFL team soon or he may need to take up the Rush on their offer.
It was all good just a season ago…
