It usually makes for an interesting situation when a player changes teams and there is already someone on the new team wearing their preferred jersey number. When Chad Ochocinco arrived in New England tight end Aaron Hernandez didn’t have a problem relinquishing #85 to his new teammate. Donovan McNabb’s arrival in Minnesota saw a bit of negotiating take place between he and punter Chris Kluwe for the #5 jersey.
In Philadelphia wide receiver Steve Smith, who wore #12 for the New York Giants, is the new guy. His situation is a little different than Ocho’s and McNabb’s. Their numbers of choice were being worn by current players. The Eagles #12 was worn by former quarterback, still fan favorite, and Eagles Honor Roll member Randall Cunningham. He was recently a guest on a radio show on 610 WIP in Philadelphia when the topic of him allowing Smith to wear #12 came up. Here’s his response.
“No, I would not take it for a million bucks. For Jeffrey Lurie to put me in the honor roll like that, that’s not something I take for granted. I went out and I bought a ring, like a Super Bowl ring, because of that honor and I put Philadelphia Eagles on it. That’s my ring I show everybody. People ask me if that’s a Super Bowl ring and I say, ‘No. This is the ring they let me know that I was one of the players in the history of the Philadelphia Eagles and they honored me.”
Well then. It looks like #19 will be Steve Smith’s number for the foreseeable future.

He was great but he never got to a Super bowl…he’s clinging onto that number 12, like it’s gold…it’s just a number…i guess…if it’s his choice mo’ power to him. but nobody’s offering him a million dollars for it, he just makin’ conversation…I bet if somebody really would, he’d be coughin’ up that number!! LOL
I don’t blame Cunningham even considering to allow his # to be used by a player of lesser caliber.
Smith can suck it. What has he done to earn anything in Philly?
