Ben Wallace Arraigned On Charges For Drunk Driving And Weapons

Detroit Pistons forward Ben Wallace was arrested and arraigned over the weekend for drunken driving and a felony weapons charge, per the Detroit News. Wallace, a Pistons fan favorite, was stopped erratic driving when police found the gun while searching his car. Here are some details:

Wallace, 37, of Bloomfield Hills was pulled over about 3 a.m. Saturday behind the wheel of a 2007 Cadillac Escalade, township police said. Wallace was arrested without incident for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

A search of the vehicle found an unloaded pistol in a backpack in the passenger compartment, police said. At the police station, Wallace was given a breathalyzer test, which showed he had a blood alcohol count above the .08 level considered intoxicated. The reading was not released by police.

Wallace was arraigned Saturday in front of Bloomfield Hills 48th District Court Magistrate Judith Holtz on the OWI charge, a 93-day misdemeanor, and the unlawful carrying of a concealed weapon, a five-year felony. He was released to a family member on $5,000 personal bond after the arraignment and is scheduled back in court for a pre-exam conference at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 3. Michigan Secretary of State Records reveal no previous drunken driving offenses for Wallace.

Wallace is currently on his second stint with Detroit and has been a fan favorite over the years due to his tough defense, hustle and rebounding. Coincidentally his case will be seen by the same judge that that sentenced Jalen Rose to 20 days for a DUI earlier this year. Interesting how he randomly ended up with the EXACT SAME judge, but we all know the judicial system has it’s “flaws”. Hopefully this doesn’t land Wallace in jail for too long as he has said that once he retires from basketball he wants to attend law school.

In 2010, Wallace averaged only 2.9 ppg and 6.5 rpg in only 22.9 minutes per game while appearing 54 games. Hopefully we don’t see a string of NBA players arrested like we did during the NFL lockout, when it seemed as if a player was in handcuffs every other day. We wish ‘Big Ben’ the best of luck with his legal issues.
