Andre Johnson of the Houston Texans and Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions will probably appear at the top of most wide receiver lists, although Larry Fitzgerald and Roddy White will probably get some votes as well. To be honest you can’t go wrong with either of the four and trying to choose one over the other might take you long enough that the Jeopardy theme music starts to play. A hard decision for some appears to be an easy one for the Houston Texans #80. On the Dan LeBatard show yesterday Andre voted for the other Johnson.
“No. I’m not the best (laughs),” he said. ” … There’s a lot of great guys out there, man. I’m a fan of the game. You look at … I’m a big fan of Calvin. Calvin Johnson. Right now, I would probably say he is the best.”
Calvin Johnson was selected #27 on NFL Network’s top 100 players of 2011 list.
Andre Johnson was chosen #7
If I had to choose one without comparing stats I would probably go Andre, with Calvin a close second. Both are fast, have great hands, good leaping ability, and are stronger than most corners in the NFL. Andre has the edge in season yardage totals (back-to-back 1,500 yard seasons in 2008 and 2009) but has yet catch more than 9 TDs in a single season. Calvin hasn’t amassed Andre’s yardage yet (career high of 1,331), but does have better season TD totals (12 in 2008 and 2010).
ESPN’s Cris Carter doesn’t agree with Andre Johnson.
“Calvin Johnson, he’s very, very good at Madden and Tecmo Bowl or whatever they’re playing now. But on film, when I watch film, and I break down the film, he’s not to the point of these guys yet. That doesn’t mean he can’t play. He just not there yet.”
“Calvin Johnson, you don’t have to double-team him to take him out of the game. Now, I made eight Pro Bowls. I made it with five different quarterbacks. They weren’t always great. So I don’t want to hear the excuse that I’m not playing with a great quarterback.”
