If you recall (and how could you not) back on July 7th virtually the whole sports world was on pins and needles waiting to find out where then free agent LeBron James (now referred to by #LTSB as #6) would be taking his talents for 2010-2011 season. Yes the show was egotistic in it’s execution, but there was an underlying gesture of charity that was involved with the ESPN televised program. All advertising proceeds and revenue generated were to be allocated to rebuilding Boy & Girls clubs around the country.
Good to see that some of the proceeds have actually been put to use as the Santa Monica Boys & Girls Club will unveil the first completed project that was funded from the $3 million that was generated. The ribbon was cut for unveiling the court on December 16th. Here is some info from the press release:
Fox Sports radio host and anchor Deb Carson will emcee a ribbon-cutting event for the opening of the new basketball courts at the Santa Monica Boys & Girls Club (SMBGC). The courts will also be used for more sports, fitness and recreation programs including tennis, baseball, soccer and roller hockey.
As much as we all criticize #6 for the “The Decision” and the manner of the show and how it played out, I have to commend James’ people for following through ad being committed to their pledge. Hopefully we continue to see more of these types of positive developments of the show. Maybe that will help most people forget the actual show and remember that despite the improper and selfish in execution, the intentions were at least charitable.
